The book collector who had no Will – Based on a true story.
Bob was a kind and generous man who had always put his family first. He was the type of person who always had a smile on his face and was always willing to lend a helping hand. One of his favourite pastimes was scouring charity shops and car boot sales for rare books to add to his collection. Unfortunately, Bob never took the time to prepare a will.
When Bob suddenly passed away, his two children, Margaret and John, were left completely devastated. They were faced with the difficult task of trying to figure out what to do with Bob‘s estate without a will.
The biggest problem was that Bob had no life insurance, so the children had to figure out a way to pay for the funeral costs. Margaret and John had to take out loans and sell off some of their father‘s rare book collection to cover the expenses. In addition, Bob‘s estate had to be divided between Margaret and John.
This was a difficult process since Bob did not have a will to indicate how he wanted his assets to be divided. Margaret and John fought over what possessions of their fathers they wanted to keep and sell, dividing the money equally between them.
Margaret and John disagreed on what to do with Bob’s first print, first edition Harry Potter book.
Margaret and Bob had a strong connection through their shared passion of book collecting, and Margaret was aware that the book‘s value could increase over time. However, John wanted to sell it for a quick profit.
John won this argument and the book sold at auction for £11,000 minus fees.
Three and a half years later, that book is now worth a minimum £75,000.
Margaret and John have had a strained relationship ever since.
